Welcome to "Crow's Nest" on Orr's Island - What to Do, Where to Go!

City/town information

Your stay is at “Crow’s Nest”, our summer home, on Orr’s Island in Harpswell. We included Brunswick, Freeport, and Boothbay Harbor as they are close and often visited and Bar Harbor, a bit farther away but worth the trip!
Your stay is on Orr's Island, an island in Casco Bay and the Gulf of Maine, part of the Atlantic Ocean. The island is within the town of Harpswell, Maine, and forms an archipelago with Sebascodegan Island (also known as Great Island) to its north and, to the south, is connected to Bailey's Island by the renowned Cribstone Bridge, which is the only one left in the world of its type. Harpswell proper is located across the bay and easily accessible by car with great trails, walks, scenery, historic places, and restaurants. You get to Orr's Island via Great Island by the Orr's Island/Great Island Bridge, which is connected to the town of Brunswick on the mainland by Route 24 north over the Gurnet Bridge. Bowdoin College operates a 118-acre coastal studies centre on Orr's Island with beautiful FREE walking trails, bring your pups (please see that listing for more details).

~13 miles (~20-minute drive from the house) - "Old, original" Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College and its downtown is quaint with lots of shops, food shops, "Morning Glory" health food store, coffee shops, diverse restaurants (Asian-infused, Chinese, Indian, Irish, Japanese, Thai, Pizza, American, food trucks), old inns to eat or drink at, and has art & food fairs on the town green all summer long. Also, it has a laundromat(s), small hair salons, and other cute shops. Then you have what I call "Newer" Brunswick that is about 2-3 miles away from "Old, original" Brunswick on the way to the house at what Mainers call "Cook's Corner" where there are 2 large shopping centres with grocery, pharmacy, and big-box stores such as: Hannaford's supermarket (huge), Shaw's supermarket (huge), Super Walmart, CVS, Lowes, Staples, Pet Smart (pet supplies, foods, snacks, etc.), TJ Max, Dollar Tree, Goodwill, and more for ANY supplies you might need, a laundromat, gas stations, and other eateries such as Starbucks, Five Guys, KFC, Burger King, McDonald's, and a couple of other fast-food & pizza places. ~40 miles (~60-minute drive from the house due to the various side roads and lower speed limits) via ME-24 N and US-1 N - This STUNNING town revolves around old & beautiful inns, great wharf, and restaurants and calls itself "the soul of the coast," the residents of Boothbay Harbor are proud of their seaside town, with its bright summer colours and beautiful snowy winters. A popular sailing and kayaking destination, Boothbay offers more than just boats. There's delicious seafood, seasonal festivals, and plenty of nature trails to explore. Kids will love visiting Fritz, the 23-pound lobster at the Maine State Aquarium, while adults enjoy jazz concerts or comedy shows at the historic Opera House. Note: Airbnb does not list the town, thus why Harbor Inn comes up, but when at Boothbay / Boothbay Harbor all is walkable and fun!

~165 miles (~3-hr drive from the house due to the various side roads and lower speed limits) - Bar Harbor, Maine is the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of America's most visited national parks, and the largest community on Mount Desert Island. Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. It serves as a gateway to the mountains and cliffs of neighbouring Acadia National Park. Towering over the park, Cadillac Mountain has trails and views of the town, the bay and the Cranberry Islands. Sand Beach is ringed by mountains. From the town pier, the Shore Path winds along the bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Porcupine Islands. Is it worth visiting Bar Harbor Maine? Heck yeah, since this gorgeous town on Mount Desert Island overlooks stunning Frenchman Bay, is easily one of the best beach towns in Maine, and is the unofficial getaway to the ethereal beauty of Acadia National Park. So yes, clearly a visit to Bar Harbor is a total must for anyone planning a trip to Maine.

1.25 miles - Seasonal check dates & times - A family favourite for lunch and dinner with an amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean and right next to the renowned Cribstone Bridge (only one left in the world). Not a big restaurant (we love that), charming, and has awesome outdoor seating is available on their dock and inside too. A simple menu, mainly seafood, and unique adult beverages. Great for kids too. Basically, a must-do when they are open for the "season". Not open year-round so check/call if you are here in April, May, September, and October.

~2 miles from the house - Seasonal check dates & times - Love the owner who we have known for 30+ years, quality food, and right next to BIGS (Bailey Island General Store). AWESOME breakfast and good for lunch or early dinner. No views as with other restaurants but sometimes will have a live band and we love to support our local peeps. The hours open are a bit odd so I'd call beforehand or just stop by while driving around or visiting BIGS (another MUST) and the Giant's Stairs Trail (see that listing under "Sightseeing" section)!

General Store - Basics, Food, Beer-Wine-Alcohol

You can do your main shopping for your stay in Brunswick on the way to the house, but “BIGS” has a lot of what you may need and we encourage our friends to shop & support local, family-owned establishments. SPECIAL NOTE - Whichever store you buy Beer or Alcohol, Maine by law requires all stores to charge the SAME price. So, we encourage you to buy here and support our locals. :-)
~2 miles from the house - "BIGS" has many of the kitchen, snacks, and basics needed for what you may have forgotten (eggs, milk, butter, sugar, brownie mix, canned pumpkin ... batteries, band-aids, etc.) and it prepares & serves a wonderful, simple breakfast and lunch on-location or take-out and even has fresh-made pizza to go (wonderful for the kids at the house for lunch or dinner). Oh, and many say their lobster rolls are better than most restaurants (and they sell out). ALSO, they sell beer, wine, and alcohol and since all prices in Maine by law have to be the same wherever you buy these, we encourage you to buy here and support the locals. :-)

~2 miles from the house - LOBSTER ALERT - GO HERE!!! :-) Need lobsters to cook at the house? Glen's Lobsters is the place to go. It is not a restaurant and rather a wholesaler who also sells lobsters right off the boat. Glen's Lobsters is our favorite family, go-to place to get VERY reasonably priced and fresh lobsters caught each day and brought to their wharf. Our family has been going to Glen's for 60+ years! Closed on Sundays and MUST call ahead to check if they have what you want, as they might sell out. Normal hours are 10 am - 4 pm on other days, but make sure you call. Also, Glen's Lobsters is located at Mackerel Cove Landing (also listed under "Sightseeing"), which is HIGHLY suggested to visit because it's a wonderful, classic Maine visual experience of lobster and fishing boats in a stunning cove setting that opens up to the ocean with a small beach to walk, picnic benches to eat and enjoy the view, and two small fields. And all of it is very dog-friendly!

Favourite food & adult beverages with scenery for lunch or dinner (Brunswick-Old Downtown)

These are popular restaurants, inns, and other establishments all in "Old Downtown" Brunswick where Bowdoin College is located and only a 15-20 minute drive from our house - and on the way to our house - that serve lunch and/or dinner, the Inns have great breakfasts too. We love options and now you have them!
We love "Old Downtown", historic Brunswick that is walkable and my dog is named Joshua! Joshua's serves Americana food & drink and a fun tavern/pub environment. Popular, casual local eatery with a patio and it is known for its chowders & other seafood fare.

Long-running area go-to for pasta dishes & other Italian mainstays in a warm, welcoming environment. This recent 2023 review says it all: "Excellent food. Ok, lets get real. $$$ lunch special $13.00 for mussels, clams, diced crab, and a giant scallop in white sauce on pasta. That's a great deal in 2023 ... Bargain, delicious. I'm going back next year. My wife had lobster, peas, and tomatoes in white sauce over pasta for $20.00 - another home run for this restaurant. And they give you delicious garlic knots with your meal ... omg ..see you next year."

Love Oysters? So do we! Simple, fun spot on the pier, where you can find other similar restaurants we love for seafood and brew, such as Portland Lobster Company, just a 3-minute walk from Js Oyster. Public parking by the pier area can get expensive - $30+ for the day, but it's worth it as revitalized downtown Portland and all by the pier is fun and beautiful.

Located in Portland, this is another popular spot by the water and it offers a mix of traditional American cuisine and new unique items always added. The menu changes daily based on the products local farmers, fishermen, and foragers bring to them each day, often prepared over an open wood-fired grill or in our wood-fired oven.

Seasonal American restaurant that pays homage to Maine’s best ingredients. Housed within a historic building recently rebuilt brick-by-brick, Twelve is an intentional study in farm-to-table dining featuring "Modern New England" cuisine". We find that the food, service/staff, atmosphere, drinks, and experience were all truly fantastic! “Twelve,” hints at seasonality and the months of the year, as the rotating dishes showcase sustainable produce procured in peak season from area farmer’s markets, plus proteins from local fish purveyors and farms. If the meal is the whole building, then ingredients such as fresh oysters from Chebeague Island Oysters, yogurt from Milkhouse Farm & Creamery, and beef from Caldwell Farms are the individual, precious bricks.

Chic eatery offering brunch staples, small plates, seafood & steak, plus wine & cocktails. If you like Italian and Spanish cuisines, you should visit Via Vecchia. Here you may order delicious wine, Mai tai, or coffee martini. Invite your soulmate to this place with a cosy atmosphere. Many guests describe the decor as spectacular and we love it too!

Binchotan-fired cooking & sake bar, serving Japanese-inspired eats in the heart of the Old Port. A review from a friend says it all: "We visited Bar Futo with a very large party that included children. The restaurant accommodated us well, provided excellent service and very good, shareable food. Among the many dishes we tried were the short ribs, the gnocci, several chicken skewers, the cuke salad and Japanese ice which enclosed a strawberry rhubarb dessert. This does not encompass everything we tried but were definitely some highlights. The portions are ample and sharing is the most fun so everyone can taste. The cocktails were fun and everyone enjoyed a variety of cocktails, wine and beer. There were items appropriate for the children (ages 6 and 8) so everyone left satisfied. The atmosphere is very active and fun and somewhat loud but in a good way. This is a very, very good restaurant and definitely can be enjoyed by a large party."
